The private life of the Queen: Intimate and rarely seen photographs show Elizabeth's softer side

  • New book has smiling and rare pictures of Queen Elizabeth II as a glamorous young woman
  • Some of the images were discovered in rolls of film more than 60 years after they were first taken

Whether laughing as she drives her children, beaming as she boards a plane beside her husband, or captured half-smiling in glamorous official pose, this set of rare and touchingly intimate pictures show Queen Elizabeth II as we have rarely seen her before.
 
The images, some of which were snapped by bystanders, others taken by famous names, will be unveiled in a comprehensive book published this week commemorating the long reign of Queen Elizabeth.

One of the royal couple waving goodbye from the steps of a jet returning from a tour of the West Indies in 1966, taken by Glaswegian royal photographer Harry Benson, was found undeveloped in a roll of archived film.
 
The £99 book, from high-end publisher Taschen, is aimed at an international as well as British market.

It features the work of Sir Cecil Beaton, Yousuf Karsh and Lords Snowdon and Lichfield, as well as that of more contemporary photographers Wolfgang Tillmans, Rankin and Annie Leibovitz.
 
Golden has included images of the Queen meeting leading figures of the 20th century, including the Beatles and John F Kennedy.
 
In one image from 1956, Marilyn Monroe can be seen in a shimmery low cut dress with full-length gloves as she waits her turn in a line of stars at the premiere of The Battle of the River Plate in Leicester Square to meet Queen Elizabeth.
One particularly touching image shows the Queen driving through Windsor in her Daimler in 1957, with a young Prince Charles in the front seat and Princess Anne in the back.
 
Mr Golden, a former editor of the British Journal of Photography, who now lives in New York, told the Observer: 'While there have been a few books on the subject this year, there's never been anything quite like this book.'
 
He added: 'The formal portraiture has to be an important part of the book.
 
But we also wanted to convey the relentless travelling, the rituals of meeting and greeting, whether it be in Ghana, France or the US - especially, in the 1950s to 1960s, when she was perceived as a glamorous figure, who would draw huge crowds wherever she went.'
Publishers Taschen said: 'Born in 1926, married in 1947, crowned as Queen in 1953, for over six decades she has steadfastly and loyally carried out her duty on behalf of her country, never speaking out of turn or putting a foot wrong.
'The book tells her remarkable royal story through hundreds of stunning photographs, many previously unseen and sourced from multiple archives in the United Kingdom (including the Royal Collection), Continental Europe, and the United States.
'These images have it all: history, politics, glamour, fashion, culture, travel, and, of course, hats.'

At 50 Jodie Foster has a better figure than many women half her age.
The Beaver star and director was at a children's charity poker event in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, on Saturday night and her outfit choice showed off her enviable frame perfectly.
As she posed happily on the red carpet with fellow star Robert Downey Jr. the actress looked confident and every inch the veteran Hollywood star she is.

Foster wore an elegant black satin pencil skirt which she teamed with a classy black fitted jacket.
The jacket was tailored at the waist with a satin ruffle detail and low enough to show off just a hint of cleavage.
She opted for classic black pumps for footwear and her hair and make-up were minimal fuss.

Robert Downey Jr, also in attendance at the Mending Kids International’s Four Kings & An Ace Celebrity Poker Tournament at the London Hotel gave his suit a modern twist with combat-style trousers and pale blue loafers.
Patricia Arquette was also present and showed up in a rather interesting ensemble.
The Stigmata star, 44, wore a three-quarter length black skirt, a sheer cream shirt and a waistcoat.

She then topped it off with a loose cream three-quarter length jacket and low black heels with bronze piping.
Camille Grammer was another participant of the event and showed off her toned limbs in a flirty LBD.
The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills cast member, 44, accessorised with an on-trend studded ring clutch.
Meanwhile Foster is set to be the fourth youngest person ever to win the Golden Globes' Lifetime Achievement Awards.
She started her acting career at aged three and by 15 had already earned an Oscar nomination.
She has won two Academy Awards for Best Actress - one for her role in The Accused in 1989 and later for her work in Silence of the Lambs in 1992.

Nicole Scherzinger outshone her fellow judge Tulisa Contostavlos on Sunday night's result show of The X Factor.
Stepping out as the picture of elegance, Nicole looked flawless in a black floor length organza gown.
Once again the 34-year-old showed Tulisa, 24, how it's done when taking to the spotlight.

Easily defying her 47 years, the slim star strutted onto the stage in a glittering catsuit with metallic tiger stripe-style sequins and sexy thigh-high black boots.
The five-time Grammy winner finished off her Sin City look with waist-long curly extensions and dramatic black gloves which had several dangling streamers attached at the wrists.
'Thank you so much! You guys are going to get me all emotional, and then my eyelashes are going to fall off,' Twain said to the crowd, according to The Canadian Press.

'I take a lot of steam showers, and (former Colosseum headliner) Bette Midler has recommended some [throat] sprays. Everybody has given me their little tips, and I’m just being very careful. I take good care of myself.'

The 43-year-old shared a snap of her relaxing in her hotel room in Kuala Lampur, resting her head on the shoulder of her  boy friend, Jasper Smart.
